If I was forced to choose just one tool for turning wood it would be a ½-in spindle gouge. With this gouge I can turn big and small spindles — you see a very small spindle, and reduce square spindle blanks to round. (You don't need a roughing gouge.) This is my preferrd tool for hollowing into endgrain and shaping bowl profiles, and it can hollow small bowls.

Here’s my woodturning process for my ornament stands! These sea urchin ornaments were something that I started making when I was selling my work at the Charleston Farmers Market. Some questions I routinely received were, “what is it?”, “what do I do with it?”, or “where do I put it?”. I’d encourage people to hang them different places and it seemed like customers wanted to keep them up all year as opposed to every holiday season on a Christmas tree. I needed to come up with a stand to show them off and it had to be something that was relatively simple and easy to make while still maintaining an elegant look to match the ornaments.
