What's Happening

October 2, 2026

We are only 3 weeks away from this year's MSWG Oktoberfest.
At the NHLA on Saturday the 24th of October.
From: Rick Gillespie, MSWG President
Here is what we have planned:
CLUB BUSINESS 9:00 to 9:15
SHARPENING: 9:15 to 10:30 main classroom
Three of the most experienced turners in our club will be demonstrating 4 different sharpening systems. Not only demonstrating but answering questions along with the pros and cons of each system. Here is your chance to see and compare before you buy. The fourth system most of you have probably never heard of before.
ART CLASS 9:15 to 10:30 IN 3rd class room
Back by popular demand, Lisa Jo Purdue will be conducting a hands on art class. This year's project will be not only fun but different from last year's wigstand class.
All art supplies will be provided.
WOOD IDENTIFICATION: 10:45 to 12:00
J.W. Higgins will be teaching you how to identify wood not only as a tree but also as a board. He will be sharing all the inside info about which woods are best for different projects but also which ones to avoid. He will also have some of his best boards and blanks with him for sale.
HOW TO MAKE YOUR OWN SANDING PASTE...CHEAP
Rick Gillespie will be showing how to make your own sanding wax (like Yorkshire Grit) and finishing polish (like Shine Juice) for way less than you could buy it for. You can achieve a finish that looks like you sanded to 1000 grit without all the work.
COOKING CLASS: 10:45 TO 12:00 3rd classroom
Chef Manning will be teaching how to make one of his favorite signature dishes and then we all get to try it out at lunch.
SHARPENING STATIONS 10:45 to 12:00
Need help on how to sharpen your tools? Hands on training by the 3 teachers you just watched demonstrating how to sharen. One on one instruction on the system of your choice. (You must bring your own tools to be sharpened).
LUNCH 12:00 to 1:00 Hamburgers and hotdogs and drinks will be provided.
BRING YOUR FAVORITE SIDE DISH OR DESSERT.
BELT SANDER DRAG RACING 1:00 until we have a winner.
It may sound crazy but it is a lot of fun. Just ask anyone who participated last year. Defending champion from last year Sven Nystrom will be back and ready to take on all comers. There will be two categories this year; category 1.off the shelf unaltered and category 2. altered to help it go straight or run faster. Put your engineering thinking cap on.
One thing is for sure...A good time will be had by all!
